| Posting is great, but limits can sometimes suck, I knoW all of you like to put your goddamn best into RPing, but sometimes too long is just too long. Iv been approached a few times to impose a limit on the post's via para number and here is the poll for you all to get a chance to help decide.

| I can't vote on this. When I'm inspired I'm inspired. I may not always have the best quality. I may not be the most vernacular, but I cannot accept limiting my imagination.

| This is going to be a hard limit to enforce, not because it's difficult to count, but rather that it's a weird one. If someone clumps paragraphs together, then it'll be easy to get a lot out. However, if you're using proper breaks to cover dialog, this can go fast - especially when dealing with multiple characters in a single post, or a lot of talking with action.

| I believe this is more of a notion to help control over posting. Now don't get me wrong, even I am a victim of it... but its more of a control overall quantity. To be honest, you are right Harrington. There is sometimes a reason to post more than 8 paragraphs. I voted for 8 paragraphs not for the sole reason to hinder those from their creative ability, but more towards the average post. I will admit, when I picked 8 I understood that many people will sometimes cross the line in certain cases. If you go case by case, there are always special cases that require a long drawn out post to cover everything in an initial incident. Those are to ignore the minimum post line, but if all you are doing is taking off your pants to take a crap (in which case, I really don't want any of yall to go into any detail) all we ask is to get to a certain point.
Yes, a lot of fluff is necessary to describe what makes your character different. That I am not opposed to at all. A few mental thoughts, a few ass shakes, those are perfectly fine and considerate. It shows your character who you are, how you like to walk, and plenty of detail to show how you dress.
Nevertheless, not a lot of people like to read 10-12 paragraph posts back to back to back to back. I don't mind characters showing off, and running around flashing their underpants. Thats the stuff that I love, but sometimes a post can be done in 3 paragraphs versus 10 paragraphs. Don't complain saying it is not true, I am a pure victim of this incident once or twice in my time here at HHSR. I utterly ENJOY reading those posts, but eventually I say "Damn... its too much... get to the point already. This person has posted 4 times, and he or she keeps going on and on.... give me a chance to post."
To cover up on some other issues involving this reasoning: If you are complaining because you just got back from a 5 day vacation, and that you are just ready to post. You read through your thread you are involved in and realize there are at least 3 posts with 8+ paragraphs in it, then its not the others users fault. We encourage users to post at least 3-5 times a week, or at least spend 3-5 hours a week on the site, but there are others more involved that want to keep the ball rolling as fast as possible. And to me, that is completely fine.
Before anyone gets in their pants about "what is a paragraph" I will just do some ascii garbage to show you how long I believe a complete 1 paragraph is.

If that somehow screws up on yalls crappy native resolutions, then the basic idea is that 1 paragraph is equal to...1 paragraph, 8 font, in yahoo messenger.

| I'm not going to vote at all either. I would say way more than that but, hell, I might exceed the goddamn 'personal opinion' limit, too. I'm sure there must be one of 'those' stuffed up the member's asses already.
I don't like being told how to roleplay, and I sure as hell don't appreciate being told I have a limit on how much I can write per post. Eh, fuck it! Yall will just do what you want to do anyway, as always, so I'll save my breath.
This forum is starting to feel more like a Para Nazi Bootcamp than any sort of medium that encourages participation and creativity among its members...oh, yeah, and lets not forget fun-- God fucking forbid anybody should accidentally have any of THAT!
Any ol' how, that's more than I wanted to say to begin with, but enough so you can pretty much get the gist of my opinion on this subject.
Still want me to vote on it? Add "whatthefuckever" to the list of options and I'll consider it.

| I only voted for the maximum be cause I do enjoy reading that much. Sorry guys but if someone can put that out, and have it be good then I want to read it.. Thats how it works. I personally often put out two single typed sigle spaced pages per post. If you dont want to read that much. Dont post where I am, or simply hope I am not feeling wordy. If your lucky, I might make it one page, but no mater what the limit is, or how it gets enforced i am going to write my posts in my fashion.

| blah. I Hate extremely long post that repeat the same thing over and over. Wasn't this topic covered before?
anyway. I Skim read those long posts. I don’t even bother to read half of them. Its not something I pride myself with. I hate to Skim read. But These posts are just plain silly.
So you like to write a book, eh? well did you ever consider that your book might be repetitive and pointless OH! and not to mention Boring. I read posts like a book. If I like it I'll keep a hold of it and read it, if not I'll return it to the shelve in a high far away spot where it may never be picked up again.
And sure I know, If you don’t like it then don’t post where I'm at. Sometimes you cant help it and you end up with these people in the same thread. I am not about to leave the thread just because a long posting person is going to be there. I would rather just ignore every single one of their post and pretend they are the giant elephant in the room that I have no interest in at all.

| I have a suggestion. Since everyone has a difference in what a paragraph really is on the forum... I suggest a character limiter instead (you can thank Sakari for the idea). What I mean is, we limit the post based on a predetermined number of characters. Many blogs support this to prevent spam. Its like those text devices, they limit them on cellphones.
There is a way to do it via coding: no one has to count character by character for what you have.
Here is an an example how how long a post should be before its reached the maximum:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

| Good news everyone! Found a character counter: http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/charcount.shtmlMy character limit is... *plugs in all 8 paragraphs* 8983 characters (including spaces). That website also has the java scripts for it. If ya can Stranger, all you have to do is implement or just use it as a reference tool for later. I would say a rough 10,000 characters (or 8 1/2 paragraphs) should be sufficient for a post any day of the week. 1sp- Ms. White | |

| Sounds like a good plan. Hope every sees how 8 paragraphs is a good amount of space to write in. I mean you don't always need it, but as a max it will work okay

| Hey! Here's a suggestion for all you 'word count, post limit' loving fuckers....go back to yahoo chat where the death of roleplay began with, yeah, word limits on posts.
Yep, I really did just say that.

| I just want to know what the penalty is for posting too much. If it's lame, expect the limit to be duly ignored.

| Upon further review, I have a better idea.
As Sean states, how do we really enforce this rule. Well its pretty simple: only enforce it when it actually matters. Some people can just post that much. I don't want to hinder that ability more than anything else. So my suggestion is to just let it be a lightly enforced rule. Meaning...
If you are in your room posting (for example), post as much as you like. It is YOUR room. No one should complain about it. If you are in a private thread, like a pool party, where you are the instigator... then its your thread to do as you please (in posting length wise). If someone walks in later to the thread, then starts to complain about post length... then the new arrival should be silenced. It was there fault to walk in there in the first place. Therefore, the initial posting RPer has the option of setting the para limit so to speak.
Nevertheless, in common areas like classrooms, lounges (public), or courtyards (public)... some control may be necessary for the other readers. Since there are like 4-6 members in each class, they may want to keep things toned down a bit in order for others to keep up.
I know this is a strange rule to enforce, but it has its merits. It lets two sides win without too much bickering. Its the best methodology I have for this situation. | |

| Well consider this... A paragraph consists of 2 sentences at minimum. So really it does not mean that 8 paragraphs need to be insanely long for each paragraph. Now I know there are some here who do excellent work at paragraphing, but there are some who do not know paragraph structure.
Some items or topics are intermixed with entirely different topics in the paragraph, making it look all jumbled up. This is basically what my college English II instructor (who has a doctorate in Business Administration and English) would call "trash paragraphing" or "hot dog paragraphs." Remember the hot dogs from over 10 years back? Made of every animal or roadkill you can think of. Same concept. Nobody loves the everything dog, just the All-Beef ones.
If people want to do up to 8 paragraphs in RP, then please do so. As long as I can read it without getting confused from "trash paragraphing" Just make sure your paragraphs are well thought out and organized, and your readers will show more compliment than complaint.
Sincerely,
Tetsu Kurama |

| A paragraph consists of 5 sentences minimum, pick up an English book. If your making two large sentences to a exorbitant length, then that just beans you should of never passed high school. | |

| Not arguing with anyone. And technically a paragraph can be 2 sentences depending on the situation. But that is how I was taught back in High School. Dunno where you went to High School just as much as you dunno where I went to High School. Different places have different texts and teachers. Plus, I never implied a sentence has to be enormously long either. That just becomes a run-on sentence, and those suck.
Your post before this one could also be considered a paragraph at the same time too Stranger. Not trying to be critical about it, just putting in the irony. No offense really.
All I care is that the paragraphs are organized, not disorganized like the local garbage dump. Not to sound like I am disagreeing, I just speak on what I experienced as much as you speak based off your own experience.
Thanks for the extra info. Gives me something to work on at the same time too. |

| A paragraph is what I posted before *points to above*. I am mainly going for length size. Thats the main problem in the grading, someone could type up 2 very extensive paragraphs that is logically consistent and others type up 3 small paragraphs and gets more points. We kinda need a system, thats why I chose a character limit.
Here is my idea of a character limit for grading (Of course, I am not in charge of it. Since we are on the subject, might as well go for it).
800-1000 characters = Decent sized paragraph (or a solid one). 1000-1200 characters = Beefy paragraph.
The main reason why I am suggesting a character limit is that there are different people with different ways to post a paragraph. Sometimes only 5 small sentences are needed, but I believe that others who post more necessary detail should have that specific right.
You can actually post upto 20 paragraphs if you prefer, I am just saying we need a character limit to help push down on the OVERALL words. I can understand why you might say 5 sentences = a paragraph, but when someone goes to review them... they don't really have time to keep sentence count with all the paragraphs you may do.

| Not to be rude, or anything like that Tetsu. But That I am aware of Both In the United States and Mexico a paragraph consists of 5 sentences, no matter where you go. Believe me, I've lived in a few states myself, thanks to my parents, and have attended school in each one of these states. All of which would agree that 5 sentences equal 1 nice and rounded up paragraph. Believe me when I say this, every English teacher forced this on to me, no matter where I went to school.
The character counter is still our best option. Paragraphs grading seems to only be causing a bit of a problem. But Until we can come up with a good grading system, we will have to keep this debate going. |
